Ages: Two initial workshops will be offered, one for Teens (ages 15-18) and another for Adults, with a complementary joint class regroup and reading session.

Class Synopsis:
We’ve been telling stories since our ancestors carved drawings on cave walls. Today we think of stories as the basis for TV shows or novels. But storytelling is used everywhere -from politics to entertainment, from journalism to corporate branding - to sharing our day at the dinner table.

Stories help us share experiences and history. They help us empathize, forge social bonds, persuade and inform. Storytelling is the most powerful form of communication. It’s also the least learned communication skill.

The Essence of Storytelling workshop demystifies the art of storytelling so anyone can become a powerful storyteller in any media, format or situation.

More About This Workshop:

The workshop was created by award-winning writer/director/filmmaker Greg Newberry. A master storyteller, Newberry has condensed the art of storytelling into nine fundamental ingredients that are easy to learn, understand and apply. He shows how the ingredients are used across a variety of formats - from TED talks to songs and stories told through imagery - and how to use them to tell your stories.

You’ll be treated to a fictional short film about the power of storytelling. You’ll witness a simple story become more dramatic by adding ingredients one-by-one. And you’ll participate in a fun, interactive exercise where you’re given “plot prompts” to spark your imagination and create a story of your own.

Once you understand the fundamentals of storytelling, you’ll know how to create a story and make it richer, more compelling and emotionally moving. Whether you’re a novice or a novelist, you’ll gain a new understanding of storytelling and walk away knowing how to create compelling stories in your work and everyday life.
